Motorola Milestone achieving Android 2.2 milestone at last, Froyo update ready for download

The road to Android 2.1 may have been a long and treacherous one for Milestone users, but the one to Android 2.2 wasn't even certain of reaching its goal. Thankfully, Moto has managed to conclude its "exhaustive testing process" and is now making a Froyo firmware update available to Milestone users wishing to step their software up a notch. Flash Player 10.1, a faster browser and mobile hotspot capabilities await the intrepid updater, but Motorola warns that any DRM-locked media you have on your SD card will be lost. Weirdly enough, there's also a caution that "users may experience some adverse effects associated with the upgrade which could include slower operation of some phone functions and applications." HTC Aria for AT&T getting official Froyo update

AT&T had just said in the past few days that the Aria's Android 2.2 update was in the labs... and, well, here it is. That was a pretty painless wait, right (assuming you don't count the wait since Asia got it)? The download is up on HTC's site right now, weighing in at 165MB and warning that it'll delete your text messages and your downloaded email, wipe your apps, and scare your children... so proceed with the same level of caution that you would any firmware upgrade.

HTC Incredible S, Desire HD, News : Desire Z and original Desire will all be eating Gingerbread by the end of June

When it launched the Incredible S at MWC a couple of weeks ago, HTC promised the new 4-inch device would be quick to get a Gingerbread update and now it's giving us a definitive schedule for it by saying that Android 2.3 will be distributed to its new flagship phone by the end of Q2 2011. We're not sure four months of sitting by the window waiting for the OTA update to float in necessarily matches up to our definition of "quick," but there are much better news for owners of HTC's older devices. The Desire HD and Desire Z -- both released in September 2010 -- will also be leaping away from Froyo and up to Gingerbread and will be joined by the original Desire, which was announced way back at last year's MWC. That handset was essentially HTC's own-brand Nexus One, so we already knew it was capable of running Gingerbread, but it's still rare to see a device go through two significant Android updates (the Desire began life with Android 2.1). All these old Desires are placed on the same update schedule as the Incredible S, whereas the newly announced Desire S and Wildfire S will ship with Gingerbread preloaded.

Samsung Moment now getting Froyo upgrade -- without Samsung's or Sprint's help

Though the Moment got an official upgrade to Android 2.1, it seems that Samsung's hospitality dried up there -- Froyo hasn't showed up, and considering the difficulty they've had getting the newer Epic 4G on 2.2, we wouldn't be holding our breath. Of course, that doesn't mean the hacking community isn't doing what it can to keep the Moment up to date, and to that end, the so-called SDX Froyo M900 project recently hit Release Candidate 1. It looks like virtually all of the major issues have been cleaned up, save for GPS (doesn't that always seem to be the weak spot on Sammy hardware?) -- so if you're dying for SD-based app installs, you're going to either want to take the plunge or keep a close eye on the effort.

HTC Incredible S now shipping this week in UK, will come with Froyo to start

Though it'd originally been pegged for the second quarter, it seems HTC's bumping that up a smidge with the launch of its new flagship -- the Incredible S -- in the UK this week. Pre-orders are going on as we speak with shipments promised for tomorrow, but there's a catch: rather than shipping withGingerbread, the phones will come with Froyo to start with an upgrade to Gingerbread promised for the near future. Buyers, we've got a little homework for you: if you're feeling adventurous and in a warranty-voiding mood, try to figure out what's going on with those auto-rotating capacitive buttons, alright?

Samsung Temporarily Canceling Android 2.2 (Froyo) Update For Sprint Epic 4G

Samsung just can’t catch a break this week when it comes to updates. First the Windows Phone 7 update mysteriously bricks a bunch of Samsung handsets, and Microsoft pretty much lays the blame on Samsung’s lap. Now they’re having issues with getting the Sprint Epic 4G updated to Froyo.

The word comes from Sprint’s support forum, where a company rep claims that an “increased number of calls into Care” has lead to the update being canned “until a resolution for these issues is in place”. The issues they’re speaking of all seem to focus around spotty data connectivity and SD Card accessibility issues. Either one would be a bummer — but they’re still a lot better than handset brickage.

Having issues? Try giving your handset a hard reset (after backing up your stuff, of course.) While that’s never a welcome solution, it seems to fix the issue.

Sprint pulling Epic 4G Froyo update, cites data connectivity and SD card issues

Well, we're not quite sure what the trouble is with firmware updates for Samsung phones this week, but another one's just been pulled days after it was rolled out. This one affects the Epic 4G, which has now seen its recently released Froyo update pulled by Sprint, which says it's received reports of SD card issues and data connectivity problems from customers who've already installed the update. Still no word as to when a new update might be rolling out, but Sprint says that those who have already taken the plunge should be able to fix any problems with a hard reset -- after they backup all their data, of course.

Virgin Mobile's Samsung Intercept now getting Froyo around March 25th

Avoiding the troubles parent company Sprint had with its own update a few weeks ago, Virgin Mobile has announced on Twitter that its own version of the Samsung Intercept is signed up to get an update to Android 2.2 "about" March 25th, right around a month from today. Hopefully "about" doesn't give them carte blanche to shift it to April 25th, and then May 25th, and then... well, you get the idea -- but considering that the same hardware already has a retail update in Sprint clothing, we can't imagine there's too much work to get it reskinned with Virgin colors.

New: Samsung Epic 4G's Froyo update now available, no need to wait for OTA

Samsung apparently decided it's made Epic 4G owners wait long enough and beat Sprint's planned OTA release schedule to the punch by a few hours, posting the EB13 build that will update their phones to Froyo on its support website. Click the source link for a .exe to run from a connected PC and upgrade over USB (for rooted and unrooted devices alike, running any earlier software build) or select the Mac link for an update.zip file that can be run directly from the phone's SD card (stock devices running the most recent DI18 build only.) You'll be restoring the device to a blank slate with the former so make sure you've backed up any important SMS's beforehand. So far impressions from early upgraders on XDA-Developers suggest a noticeable performance boost, but other forum posts indicate some pesky bugs like Time Without Service battery drain are still hanging around, peep the full release notes after the break.

Samsung Captivate on AT&T gets Android 2.2, all that Froyo hasn't melted yet (new update: it's gone!)

It took about two months for Samsung to roll out the much-needed GPS fix for the Captivate, and now, a mere seven months after Google pulled a handle on the machine and twirled up a big cone of Froyo, that phone is finally getting a spoonful. Samsung has released an Android 2.2 update and the full instructions plus the download are on the other end of the source link below. Hopefully it isn't too frostbitten after all this time.

Update: Well now, we've just received a flurry of tips indicating that it's been pulled and, indeed, the page on the other end of the source link is now gone. We'll try to figure out what went wrong here.
